The last full moon of 2018 happened on December 22, 2018. It is also referred to as the full cold moon or just cold moon as it happens on the first day of Winter.

Winter Solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year. It happened on December 21st, 2018 at 5:28pm EST. The moon was almost full at the time it happened but it was quite cloudy so I couldn’t get any clear photos of it. I was able to take photos of the full cold moon on the day it was its fullest which is what I really wanted. It also marks the last one of the year so it is a nice way to end 2018.

lest which is what I really wanted. It also marks the last one of the year so it is a nice way to end 2018.

I’ve taken many photos of the moon for many years now. This year I bought myself a super telephoto lens so I can get those extra close shots. The camera I used is the Nikon D800 with the Nikon 200-500mm lens mounted on a Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB Tripod.

The moon rotates just like the Earth does. Today my mom asked me if I have ever noticed that my photos of the moon are of its different sides. So I looked back at a few of those and guess what, I do! Isn’t that cool?!

Tell me in a comment below. Can’t wait to hear about your stories. There are some events that happen once in a lifetime and won’t occur again until the next generations to come. I like to capture those as I may not get to see it again but others can enjoy my photos many years later. Thank you for visiting.

The moon is such a cool object to look at up in the night sky.

Whenever there is a special event going on with the moon, I like to hear about it so I can see it with my own two eyes; and of course capture it with my camera. I recently purchased an super zoom lens so I went out that night to get the moon close up.

Moon in Miami Florida Night Sky at 200mm

The moon was at 90% this night so it was almost completely full. It didn’t bother me that I couldn’t see it full for these photos as it was still a beautiful night.

The last image below has the moon close up as much as my lens can produce. It was a purchase well spent being able to capture something so far away and make it look like you were quite close. I was ecstatic to see how well they turned out and not lose any quality as I zoomed in. If you love astrophotography, I highly recommend this Nikon 200-500mm lens.

Did you see the Super Blue Blood Moon earlier this year? See how it looked here:

When I’m not looking up at the sky, I’m also photographing beautiful people to document those special moments in their lives. Such as this couple.

This morning, January 31, 2018, from 5:51am until 7:04am, here in South Florida, we can see the rare event of the Super Blue Blood Moon.

Super Blue Blood Moon

The last time there was a Super Blue Blood Moon was 150 years ago.

Super Blue Blood Moon

I couldn’t pass up the chance to capture this amazing event. I woke up early to head to my spot to take photos throughout the hour it was happening.

Super Blue Blood Moon

Here’s the breakdown on this moon:
super moon – When the moon is at its closest point to Earth
blue moon – Second full moon in a month
blood moon – The Earth’s shadow casts on the moon during a lunar eclipse causing a red tint

Here is an airplane flying right in front of the moon.

The moon is quite a spectacular astronomical body that orbits the Earth. It is amazing how it has many phases and have special events for us to see. When I say special events, I mean those nights that we see it pass behind the Earth into its shadow (lunar eclipse), or when it gets closer to the Earth that it looks larger in size (supermoon).

On August 20, 2013, there was a third full moon in a four full moon season so that moon is called a Blue Moon. As soon as I heard there was a rare event happening in the night sky, I make sure to get my camera, telephoto zoom lens and tripod ready for action.

2017-12-04_0001

On September 8, 2014, there was a supermoon that was also called a harvest moon. A harvest moon is a full moon that happens closest to autumnal equinox.

2017-12-04_0004

Another rare event was the Supermoon of 2015. It was not only a supermoon but it was a total lunar eclipse as well. A total lunar eclipse is also called a blood moon as it has a reddish tint. This Supermoon Blood Moon Total Lunar Eclipse happened on September 27, 2015.

There was only one appearance of a supermoon in 2017. It was just this past weekend on the night of December 3rd, early December 4th.

I can never get enough of looking up at the sky and watching the moon. It just makes me realize how big the universe is, don’t you agree? The Earth is just one piece in the large universe.
